I am pleased to present to you a few
sample tracks from the recording "Aboriginal sound instruments"
collected in the early 1960's and 70's by Alice M. Moyle.
This music is offered with all due respect to the original archivists, and also of course the Aboriginal peoples who wished to share their cultural songs with us in these recordings. Recorded and edited by Alice M. Moyle. Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies. C 1978. See notes below regarding the technical details of this conversion from the original vinyl recording to the MP3 download, as well as copyright information and concerns regarding playing these recordings in the company of a traditional Aboriginal person. |

The note on the back of the album jacket in the bold yellow square reads: "CAUTION Discretion should be exercised in playing these recorded songs in the presence of Aboriginal people. The recorded voices of singers now deceased may cause distress to listening relatives. In the case of exclusive men's and women's songs, it is advisable to ensure that these are not played to mixed Aboriginal audiences or in the presence of Aboriginal children. Moreover, it will be appreciated that certain ritual songs may mean more to some Aboriginal groups than others. As a general principal, in any one Aboriginal community, recorded songs should be played first to a group of older Aboriginal people. Permission might then be sought from these people before further playback to others."

| Misc tech stuff: These recordings were transferred from the original vinyl LP format using a Thorens TD-160 turntable with a SME 3009 II Improved tone-arm fitted with an ADC XLM-III Imp cartridge and stylus. The phono pre-amp is a hand wired electron valve (vacuum tube) type using a 6922 dual triode per channel. The line stage that feeds the computer is a hand wired vacuum tube topology using 1 dual 6201 (12AT7) triode. The computer is an AMD Athlon based system using a line level input to a SoundBlaster Live sound card. Software used through out this project is Audacity. I believe that this arrangement allows me to make the best quality recordings I can within my limited financial capabilities. The mp3 downloads provided here are 64k in order to allow the best quality/speed/size compromise. | ||
